Is Wonder a true story Auggie? ›

Wonder is not based on a true story, but is inspired by multiple real-life events. The 2017 film was based on R.J. Palacio's 2012 novel and deals with Treacher Collins syndrome. The author's personal experience and a song from 1995 inspired the creation of the book and subsequent film.

Wonder isn't recommended for children under eight. Also, we recommend parental guidance for children aged 8-13 years, because of the movie's themes and violence.

The movie has clear positive messages about choosing kindness, appreciating everyone for who they are (rather than what they look like), and true friendship; empathy, compassion, and perseverance are also strong themes.

Entering middle school as the new kid is hard, but for Auggie Pullman, the main character in the best-selling middle grade novel Wonder by R.J. Palacio, it's downright terrifying. Auggie has Treacher Collins syndrome, a rare craniofacial disorder that causes major malformations of the face.

Never Judge Anyone by their Appearance: The most important lesson that the movie teaches us is that we should never judge people by their looks. Initially, Auggie is judged by his classmates due to his facial deformity.

There are no sex or nudity shown in this movie. It's completely clean family drama. Nevertheless, a few mild kissing scenes present.

Lib burns down Anna's home, tells the council the girl has died, and then meets up with Will and Anna. At the very end, the movie returns to the framing device of the modern set. The last scene shows Lib, Will, and Anna (now Nan) on a ship bound for Australia.

Critics Reviews

Wonder is a well-crafted, well-intentioned movie. But it also downplays some important economic, emotional, medical, and psychological realities...it missed a chance to better represent the experiences of children who are already so widely misunderstood.

At one point, Anna does confesses to Lib why she is fasting, revealing her older brother, who has now passed away, sexually assaulted her and secretly married her. Through tears, she says she loves her brother and she is doing this to try and save him, and herself, from Hell.

Although Auggie's face and everyday experiences are imaginary, the lives of the some 600,000 individuals who have been diagnosed with a craniofacial condition in the United States are very much real – and 7-year-old Shane Vysocky and 13-year-old Emily Merrill are among them.

The Wonder is an invented story, but what inspired it was the very real phenomenon of 'the fasting girl,' who claimed – or was said by others – to be able to live without food.
